Alien³

Action Horror Science Fiction

After escaping with Newt and Hicks from the alien planet, Ripley crash lands on Fiorina 161, a prison planet and host to a correctional facility. Unfortunately, although Newt and Hicks do not survive the crash, a more unwelcome visitor does. The prison does not allow weapons of any kind, and with aid being a long time away, the prisoners must simply survive in any way they can.

Note : I've always had a soft spot for this much maligned threequel, even in its theatrical version, and it turns out, the assembly cut is quite a bit better. It's still got its problems, but the relentlessly grim atmosphere, peak 90s industrial aesthetics, and a fantastic cast including, of course, Sigourney Weaver, but also Charles S. Dutton, Charles Dance, Lance Henriksen, Paul McGann, Danny Webb, the inimitable and chameleonic Holt McCallany, and acting icon Pete Postlethwaite, amongst others, makes for a feel-bad gloomy good time. This version has more character building, which is appreciated, changes quite a few storylines, and shows us more of Fury 161, but is also more gruesome and gory, with a stand-out early shot showing what's left of Hicks, and why Michael Biehn was not required to come back even for a cameo. If you haven't seen this version, but you're even remotely fond of the film in general, I highly recommend it.

Picking up more or less immediately after where Aliens left off, the story sees Ripley in hypersleep being ejected from the Sulaco in an escape pod, which crashes on a remote prison planet, leaving her as the only survivor. The planet is inhabited by a skeleton crew of religious convicts who don't take too kindly to the presence of a woman, although friendly doctor Clemens, a former inmate, becomes her friend. Ripley is paranoid about why the escape pod ejected, and for good reason, as signs start showing up that something else arrived with Ripley, and it turns out, it's even worse than everyone suspects. It's a low-tech fight against a new xenomorph variant, and a race against the clock to prevent a new queen from being born, while Weyland-Yutani, eager as always to get their hands on the "perfect organism", sends a rescue party. It doesn't end well for anyone, really, and is a pretty fitting end to the trilogy, a somber, religiously tinted dirge.

This is a fairly decent transfer of a version that was never intended to be seen, and although some film damage and dust is visible here and there, it's generally pretty good, with nice color and contrast, ok detail, and at least a reasonable amount of grain. 5.1 track is fine, showing off Eliot Goldenthal's amazing score, and the commentary track is interesting, with some good info about the effects, both the quite good practical ones and the limitations of the much-maligned visual ones.

HeVK torrents always have lots of keywords. Try searching for “hevk sci-fi horror” for more frights from the future, “hevk body horror” for more parasitic infestations and unpleasant rending, or “hevk 90s” for more from the decade when goggles, sleeveless shirts, work gloves, army pants, and lace-up army boots were the coolest shit.
