Note : Another classic, this adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson's famous story features Fredric March as a doctor so kind, righteous, and repressed that he would never, ever kick a puppy, until he accidentally invents a puppy-kicking serum. The story is pretty cliché by now, of course, but the acting is solid, the transformation effects and make-up are very well done, cinematography is quite nice, and, this being just barely pre-code, there's more implied licentiousness and semi-nudity than you'd expect, especially from the lovely Miriam Hopkins. Rose Hobart and Holmes Herbert round out the main cast. Well worth a watch if you're into classic horror.
Dr. Henry Jekyll likes to philosophize about all men having a good and an evil side, but he accidentally proves himself right when he invents a serum that transforms him into the brutish, ape-like Mr. Hyde, a man with poor impulse control and average British dental hygiene. Hyde goes after Ivy, a bar singer who had previously tried to seduce Jekyll, and although she doesn't like him without the suave looks, he pays her for her company and eventually rapes her. Jekyll wovs to not use the serum again, but he starts transforming spontaneously when enraged or excited, and ends up killing Ivy, and then going after his own fiancée, with tragic results for everyone.
Despite the limitations of period optics, leading to frequent vignetting, this is a very nice, crisp, and clean remaster with great detail, subtle grain, and good contrast. The sound is of limited quality, as tends to be the case with films from this period, but it's completely workable, and the two commentary tracks are interesting.
