Note : Fritz Lang's M is not the very first serial killer film, both The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari and Hitchcock's The Lodger came out in the 1920s, but this codified so many conventions of the subgenre, and specifically the police procedural serial killer film, that echoes can be seen even in films today. It also features a terrific performance by Peter Lorre, who I hesitate to call the lead, exactly, since you don't even get a good look at him until almost an hour into the film, but what you get of him from there on out is extremely memorable. The cast also includes Otto Wernicke and Gustaf Gründgens. An essential film for anyone interested in crime thrillers, serial killers on film, or just plain suspense, and as usual with Lang, the film feels much more modern than its age, bristling with interesting camera angles, strange characters, and mounting tension.
Berlin is stalked by a killer of children, but a large reward has so far lead to no suspects. Elsie Beckmann is on her way home from school when she meets an unseen man whistling a distinctive tune, who buys her a balloon from a blind street vendor. Later on, her mother searches for her, as she has not arrived. Her disappearance heightens the tensions in the city, and when the murderer sends a letter to the police, which they analyze with modern techniques like fingerprinting and handwriting analysis, the police start cracking down on the city's criminals, desperate for leads. The criminal underground, annoyed by the interruption of their business, stages a manhunt of their own. The police trace the letter to the rooms of a man named Hans Beckert, and they lie in wait for him. In the meantime, Beckert searches for a new victim, but the street vendor recognizes his whistling, and alerts a friend, who follows Beckert and the girl. The man marks the back of Beckert's coat with chalk, making him easy to track for the various characters on the streets, but he realizes he's being followed and runs off. After a chase, Beckert hides in an office building, upon which both criminals and the police converge, but who will get to him first?
This is a quite nice restoration for a film that's clearly had some rough times. Most of it's very good quality for the time, with a few dips here and there where alternative sources were used, but it's a nice, enjoyable watch. The restored mono track sounds quite good, though of course the preservation track is more authentic, and a lot more fucked up. Both English commentary tracks are interesting, and I'm sure the German one is too if you can understand it.
