Note : The most horror-adjacent of the Sherlock Holmes stories has been adapted to film a bunch of times, but this Hammer effort was apparently the first in color, and it's a pretty good one, headed up as it is by Peter Cushing, André Morell, and Christopher Lee, all of them younger than you're used to seeing them, and in fine form. The mystery is pretty engaging too, with a bunch of red herrings and running around a foggy moor at night, and leading to a decently satisfying resolution. The rest of the fine cast includes Marla Landi, David Oxley, Francis de Wolff, Miles Malleson, and Ewen Solon.

Dr. Richard Mortimer asks Sherlock Holmes to investigate the death of his friend Sir Charles Baskerville, whose family is said to be cursed to be pursued by a hell hound, and whose nephew Henry has just returned to England to claim his inheritance. Soon after, Henry encounters a deadly tarantula, and Holmes is convinced someone is plotting to kill him. A convicted murderer has escaped prison and is hiding out on the moor, and the visitors convince Henry to stay indoors while they investigate. Watson gets trapped in a swamp and is rescued by Stapleton, a local farmer, whose daughter Henry is instantly infatuated with. As they investigate the local bishop, who has a large collection of bugs, and discover the fate of the escaped convict, who's found apparently killed by the hell hound, a sinister plot is gradually revealed, but will Holmes and Watson be able to rescue Henry from the hound?

This is a pretty middle of the road transfer, with ok color and contrast, but not all that much detail, although grain is fairly decent. Mono track is similarly ok, and the commentary track is interesting, if a bit dry.
