LIFE = ART = LIFE

Wolf Vostell was a pioneer and seminal artist. He was an artist with influence around the world because he invented the term ‘dé-coll/age’, made happenings, actions, installations and videos and, as a cofounder, very enthusiastically participated in the activities of Fluxus involving a critique of the fetishization of television and the culture of consumption.

In 1958, he carried out the first European happening in Paris and he produced his first objects with television sets and car parts. The same year he integrated a TV into a picture in the work Transmigration. Since then he continued to experiment with collages, blurred pictures, happenings, drawings, videos and many other media. Vostell’s art sets to encounter indifference in the community and spark emotional and intellectual discourse on many issues in the international cultural and political landscape. His work has critiqued directly the political system, the disasters of war, the greed of late capitalism, the oppression by the hegemonic ideologies or
consumerism, the influence of the mass media, the representation of sexuality or taboo and the treatment of marginalised peoples in our society characterized by the media manipulation, the over-excitement of consumption or the homogenization of cultural taste. For this reason, his art goes beyond the conventional spaces for art and reaches public domain and life in general.

In relation to it, the artist has come to affirm: "art equals life – life equals art." This programmatic sentence or statement shows his principle of an aesthetic confrontation with the events of the day. This means that to produce his artwork he uses a personal setting of reality combined with events from found life that find their expression in his ‘Aktionsbildsprache’ (action symbolism) and ‘Bildsprachaktion’ (symbolic action).

For decades Vostell has used art as a means to interrogate artistic, cultural and social identities, resulting in a rich, complex and provocative body of work that has consistently challenged dominant political and artistic narratives.

His unswerving belief in the role of the artist as provocateur and his ability to ‘hit the nail on the head’ have made for an art that is as uncomfortable at times as it is compelling. Indeed it is this tension between speaking the unspeakable in his subject matter and revelling in the language of actions, films and installations that makes the work so seductive. His proposals are sometimes strident and critical, yet there is also an air of mischief,
specially as he touched nerves in the traditional psyche or mocks curatorial or academic pretensions in his role as cultural agitator.

Vostell forces us to consider the question of what we want from artist today. His artworks give us a comprehensive answer: probing, provocative, witty, uncomfortable, unpalatable work which nonetheless aspires to a level of aesthetic pleasure, but also a work that cannot be forgotten and which leaves a lingering sense of unease, disturbing our world view when today, even seeming quite accepted, dissent has become increasingly unacceptable.
