Note : The cultiest of cult Japanese horror, this infamously hard to see film recently got a pretty good 4k remaster from 88 Films, and it's definitely worth seeing. The title hints of course to The Evil Dead, but the plot owes a lot to giallo as well, as does the score, and there are heavy slasher elements, but with a surreal, supernatural twist, and, shall we say, aggressively indie, experimental aesthetics, and a decent amount of gore and cool practical effects. It's certainly a trip, and very interesting as an example of early J-horror. Cast includes Miyuki Ono, Yūji Honma, and Hitomi Kobayashi.
When late night TV host Nami asks her viewers to send her home movies, she receives a mysterious tape depicting a seemingly real and very gruesome murder taking place at an abandoned US military base. Of course, she gathers a group of TV people and go to investigate the base, with the group quickly splitting up and setting off throughout the many abandoned and creepy buildings. Of course there's a masked killer on the loose, but there's also something stranger going on, weird, near-supernatural booby traps kill people off, similar to some of the deaths in Suspiria. The film gets really strange in the third act, when there are aspects of body horror and strange new creatures being born out of mutilated bodies. Some may say this doesn't quite hold up, others that it's a natural escalation of the strangeness.
This 4k remaster is probably as good as it can be, from obviously technically limited elements, the film grain is very apparent, and the cinematography in itself is a bit fuzzy and flary (though quite good aesthetically). Contrast and color is quite good. The mono track sounds good, and all of the commentary tracks provide ample information about the production.
