Note : Here's a nice upgrade to a previous encode, pretty much the definitive version of this film.
How about some transgressive feel-bad 90s independent film? A mix of the "grimy New York City" subgenre so popular in the 70s and 80s with a touch of nunsploitation and a sort of redemptive Catholic story, it all hinges on an an amazing performance by Harvey Keitel, whose police lieutenant who's mostly whoring, gambling, and consuming enormous amounts of drugs and alcohol is by turns thoroughly nasty and self-destructively pitiable. Poor, doomed Zoë Tamerlis Lund co-wrote the script with Abel Ferrara, and shows up in the film as the Lieutenant's dealer/enabler, as well as smaller roles by Victor Argo and Paul Calderón.
A NYPD lieutenant drops off his kids at Catholic school, then has a bump of cocaine and drives to a crime scene, where he steals a bag of drugs, which he later gives to a drug dealer who promises to pay him for it soon, all the while smoking crack. At night, he gets drunk and has a threesome with two prostitutes, then smokes heroin with a woman at another apartment. At the same time, a nun is raped in a church by two young criminals. As he continues stealing drugs and has bad luck at gambling, he gets involved in the investigation of the rape, and learns the nun was penetrated with a crucifix. He goes into a downward spiral of religious guilt, self-destructive behavior and gambling with money he doesn't have, as it all builds to a climax that might be redemptive or just plain nihilistic.
This new 4k transfer is probably as good as this film is every going to look, although it's still a bit murky and underexposed at time, but the flaws kind of fit the mood of the film. Check out the commentary tracks for quite a bit of information about the production and indie filmmaking of the period in general.
