Note : As you probably know, I'm not a huge fan of found footage, but once in a while, someone does something interesting with it, and this is definitely one of those cases. A slow burn folk horror with cosmic horror undertones, it goes to some very dark places, literally and figuratively, and the ending is suitably nuts. The cast of lesser known actors is quite good, with good chemistry and believable interactions, and includes
Gordon Kennedy, Aidan McArdle, and Patrick Godfrey.
It's better to go into this film not knowing too much about it, I think, but in short, it centers around a group of paranormal investigators working for the Vatican, who travel to a thirteenth century church in Devonshire that's recently been reopened, and which has had reports of supernatural activity. The local priest calls it a miracle, but the investigators are skeptical, even though microphones they set up in the church capture the sounds of growling, whispers, and infants crying. When the priest commits suicide, and the locals turn hostile, they decide to press on with the investigations on their own, with disastrous results.
It's found footage, what can I say? Whatever image quality was there in the original is probably pretty perfectly captured here. The 5.1 mix sounds fine, and the commentary track is pretty interesting.
