About:
AV1 is a modern free format providing amazing quality
at lower bitrates than h.264/265.

To improve AV1 playback, using a recent build of mpv/VLC should help drastically on dekstop and laptop platforms.
As for Android devices, the latest mpv-android should do well.

If you still can't get it to play, try using VLC and a mid
to high end Android/iDevice from 2016 or beyond. And even
Chrome can play it if you rename the .mkv to .webm!

--------------------------------

Lastly: As an attempt to spread and hopefully popularize AV1,
here's my encode command for this encode:

av1an -i "input.vpy" -e svt-av1 -v " --preset 2 --crf 36 --film-grain 12 --lp 16 " -w 1 -a " -an " --min-scene-len 60 -m lsmash -c mkvmerge -o "output.mkv"

--------------------------------

Encoder's Notes: Source is a somewhat blocky mid-2000s 1080i digital master, so temper your expectations. I've listed my Vapoursynth script below to help future encoders with similar sources.

import vapoursynth as vs
import havsfunc as haf
core = vs.core

video = core.bs.VideoSource(source="title_t00.mkv")
video = haf.QTGMC(video, Preset="slow", TFF=True, FPSDivisor=1)
video = haf.deblock_qed(video)
video = core.neo_f3kdb.Deband(video, sample_mode=5, range=20, keep_tv_range=True, preset="veryhigh")

video.set_output()
