Note : Here's a nice little piece of 90s trash for you, an American tokusatsu film based on a manga, of all things, directed by long-time Brian Yuzna SFX collaborator Screaming Mad George (and his SFX buddy Steve Wang), it sports some rad (but still faintly ridiculous) practical effects, a fair big of gore, and kind of a lackluster story that seems to be right out of shonen manga. The decent enough cast is headed up by total unknown Jack Armstrong, Mark Hamill, sporting a mustache and a sleazy come-hither demeanor, and Vivian Wu, with appearances by Yuzna regulars David Gale and Jeffrey Combs, as well as horror icons Michael Berryman and Linnea Quigley. It's ridiculous, but it's pretty fun.
Do I have to? Ok, so, a scientist is on the run from the evil Chronos Corporation, having stolen an alien artifact called The Guyver Unit. He's confronted by Lisker, the Chronos president's right hand thug, and both of them transform into aliens called Zoanoids, then Lisker kills the scientist and brings the case with the artifact back to Chronos, where his boss discovers the case actually contains a toaster. The scientist hid the unit, and when his daughter is notified by a CIA agent of his death, and her loser boyfriend follows them to the crime scene, dufus boyfriend gets his hands on the unit, and is promptly attacked by a multiethnic street gang, which of course leads to him fusing with the unit and getting encased in a biomechanical suit of armor called The Guyver, which is good for kicking ass. This heads towards a showdown and some girlfriend-saving antics, of course.
This 4k remaster is pretty nice, good color and contrast, fine detail, maybe a bit grainer than necessary, but nothing out of the ordinary. 5.1 remaster also sounds good, as does the original stereo, and both commentary tracks are worthwhile.
Hot tip
