The Last Starfighter
A video-gaming boy, seemingly doomed to stay at his trailer park home all his life, finds himself recruited as a gunner for an alien defense force.
The Last Starfighter (1984), directed by Nick Castle, Arrow 4k remaster, encoded in 10 bit HEVC with AAC sound, including 5.1 remaster, original theatrical 4.0 surround, original theatrical stereo, three commentary tracks, and subtitles in English, French, and Spanish.
IMDb : https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0087597/
Video encoded in two-pass 13.0 Mbps x265 10bit with the veryslow preset for archive quality image. Audio encoded separately with Apple AAC for the highest-quality AAC sound available. Subtitles converted to VobSub and repositioned.
Note : In the long line of post-Star Wars sci-fi films featuring a plucky teenager on a quest to save the galaxy, this stands out as one of the better ones, with a fine plot, some good performances, and fun effects, including some very early CGI that actually looks mostly very good. It also has a couple of weird horror connections: The director is in fact the same Nick Castle who played The Shape/Michael Myers in the original Halloween, star Lance Guest had a supporting role in Halloween II, and Dan O'Herlihy, excellent bad guy from Halloween III, plays a major role, but is unrecognizable under a bunch of reptilian prosthetics. The rest of the cast includes Robert Preston, Catherine Mary Stewart, and Norman Snow, as well as Wil Wheaton in a tiny, early role.
Alex is a teenager living in a trailer park with his mother and younger brother, whose life is going nowhere, and whose only entertainment is constantly playing an arcade game called Starfighter, a space combat simulator that looks a bit too advanced for 1984. When he beats the game, to the delight of the extremely supporting inhabitants of the trailer park, he's approached by an old man in a very fancy car, who says he's the inventor of the game, and invites him for a ride. However, the car turns out to be a starship, the old man is an alien, and Alex is more or less willingly recruited into fighting a war against an evil empire. After some back and forth, he ends up the good guys' last line of defense, while an android replica of him takes his place on Earth, totally failing to score with Alex' girlfriend, which is appropriate, since its name is "Beta".
Another great-looking Arrow 4k remaster, with nice color and contrast, good detail, and fine, tight grain, not much to complain about at all. 5.1 remaster, as well as the original audio tracks, sound quite good too, and the three commentary tracks are pretty interesting, including one with the lead actor showing the film to his son for the first time, which is a cute gimmick.
Hot tip
