Note : I hadn't heard of this little folk horror film before, but I was pleasantly surprised, because it's nice and creepy, with a story and themes sort of similar The Wicker Man, but with a twist (or the lack of one), beautiful, moody cinematography, menacing hooded figures, and a hell of a cast, headed up by Deborah Kerr, David Niven, Sharon Tate, a menacingly intense David Hemmings, and a young Donald Pleasence in a funny hat. Well worth watching if you're into the sort of more quiet, suspenseful horror, and also archers and funny hats.

Philippe de Monfaucon is the Marquis of Bellenac, owner of a Bordeaux estate whose vineyards aren't doing too well, but he's living a carefree life in Paris with his wife and children. He's suddenly summoned by a priest who gives him a strange amulet, and after his son has a dream about his father needing his help, the mother, Catherine, takes the family to the chateau. A sinister archer, Christian, shoots a dove as they arrive, which falls at Catherine's feet, and Philippe's aunt says that Christian and his sister Odile are wicked, but that she can't get involved. Later that night, Catherine sees Christian and Odile ceremoniously carry the dead dove into a chapel, but she's interrupted by an old man who warns her to leave and never come back. Philippe is dismissive, telling Catherine that the valley is highly superstitious, and as the head of a family that's been there for a thousand years, he has certain important responsibilities. The two sinister siblings keep popping up, and seem fixated on her oldest son, however, and when she investigates, she finds that an unusual number of the heads of the family have died in unusual circumstances. As a village festival with pagan roots starts, the proceedings seem strangely focused on Philippe and his son, and the village priest seems to be up to no good...

This is a beautiful 4k restoration, with silky gradients, super-fine grain, and excellent contrast, and a fair bit of detail for a film this old. The dual mono track is also fine, if less restored than the image. Too bad there's no commentary track or anything, I would have loved to hear someone put this into context with the rest of British folk horror.

HeVK torrents always have lots of keywords. Try searching for “hevk folk horror” for more ancient pagan rituals and menacing woodlands, “hevk cult” for more unusual religious organizations, or “hevk 60s” for more from the decade when David Hemmings became a strange sort of superstar.
