Note : A classic of world cinema, and nevertheless a pretty spooky horror movie, this Japanese film is shot in stark black and white, and is definitely a visual feast, at least if you like reeds. Kids these days love reeds, right? A story of murder, deceit, sexual triangles, and finally curses and demons, it's set in a troubled period of Japan's medieval history. The tiny but excellent cast mostly consists of Nobuko Otowa, Jitsuko Yoshimura, and Kei Satō.
In 14th century Japan, a woman and her daughter in law living in a reeded area near a river, scrape out a living as best they can while the son/husband is away at war. They ambush and kill fleeing soldiers and deserters, strip them for clothes and valuables, dump the bodies in a pit, and barter the goods for food at a local merchant's. One day, a neighbor named Hachi returns from the war, bearing bad news, the son/husband has been killed after deserting. The older woman warns the other to stay away from Hachi, but she seems attracted to him, and the two soon begin a sexual relationship. The mother in law dislikes this, and tries to seduce Hachi herself, but he rebuffs her, and she starts planning a way to get between the two. When a samurai wearing a demon mask appears, she murders him by tricking him to fall in the pit, but when she with great difficulty removes his mask, she finds his face horribly disfigured. She decides to use the mask to scare her daughter in law, and appears to her dressed as a demon when the daughter in law tries to sneak away at night to have sex. However, the mask might turn out to be more than a scary looking prop.
This film is so high-contrast that to talk about detail or grain retention is a bit redundant, but what there is of midtones are silky and with a fine, subtle grain, while both pure blacks and pure whites are abundant, making this a pretty easy encode. The dual mono track sounds fine, and the commentary track is a bit like a few old friends getting together to talk about some fun they had a long time ago, which is cute.
