Note : Another do-over of one of my very early encodes, and it's a good one for the spooky season, one of Lucio Fulci's Gates of Hell trilogy, which also includes The House by the Cemetery and The Beyond, and it's a nightmarish phantasmagoria that's riffing on Lovecraft, although ultimately Fulci falls back to what he does best, which is gore and zombies. There are some stupendously gnarly sequences here, including a drill through the head a woman who cries blood and vomits up her own intestines, and several brain-squishings, although it's also at times pretty moody, with foggy night shots of the small town of, uh, Dunwich, Georgia? The cinematography is in general very nice, and the effects are mostly quite good. The cast includes the always hugely charismatic Christopher George, Fulci muse Catriona MacColl, as well as, Carlo De Mejo, Giovanni Lombardo Radice, and Janet Ågren.

During a seance in New York, Mary, who's not even the medium, has a powerful vision of a priest comitting suicide in a cemetery. She collapses, and seems dead. The police suspect foul play, while journalist Peter, after being denied access to the crime scene, decides to visit the gravesite as Mary's being buried, and hears her screaming from the coffin, saving her from being buried alive at the last moment. The two visit the medium, who tells them that according to the Book of Enoch, Mary's visions are the precursor to the dead invading the world of the living, which will apparently happen on All Saint's Day. In the small town of Dunwich, a sex-crazed vagrant named Bob has several run-ins with the supernatural, culminating in a young woman being killed by the spirit of the evil priest, and then the father of another girl getting the wrong idea about Bob's intentions and murdering him brutally. Also in Dunwich, Gerry, a psychiatrist, and Sandra, his patient, experience strange occurrences in Sandra's house, and the dead young woman's younger brother sees an apparition of her outside his window. It turns out the dead are in fact returning, and Mary, Peter, Gerry, and Sandra arrive at the graveyard at the same time, and have to descend into a system of underground tombs to confront the undead priest and prevent the end of the world.

This is a pretty good 4k transfer, although it's fairly soft and has a bit more grain than would be ideal. Color and contrast are decent. English 5.1 track sounds good, as does the Italian dual mono, and there are so many commentary tracks, both from cast, crew, and critics, you're sure to find something you'll enjoy if you want to know more.

HeVK torrents always have lots of keywords. Try searching for “hevk italian zombie” for more of the gnarliest, rottenest living dead ever put onto film, “hevk gore” for more red stuff going everywhere, eww, or “hevk 80s” for more from the decade when horror in general became more crude, and Italy was keen to lead the trend.
