Note : Possibly the best horror movie ever made, and certainly one of my absolute favorites, this Stephen King adaptation, which deviated from the source material enough to make King denounce it, is a brilliant haunted house chiller, in which the evil of the place slowly takes hold of the mind of the weak, driving them to madness and violence. Also, its production was a brilliant torture machine in which the high number of takes slowly takes hold of the mind of the actors, driving them to total despair and hopelessness. The weak in this case is of course Jack Nicholson, with an all-time maniacal, unhinged performance, but the rest of the cast is also great, frazzled, vulnerable, but in the end decisive Shelley Duvall, prototype creepy psychic kid Danny Lloyd, Stephen King magical negro stereotype Scatman Crothers nevertheless giving a great performance, as well as small appearances by Barry Nelson, Philip Stone, and Joe Turkel. If you haven't seen it, you must. If you have, you know you should see it again.

Recovering alcoholic and aspiring novelist Jack Torrance takes a job as a winter caretaker at the monumental Overlook Hotel in the Colorado Rocky mountains, bringing his wife Wendy and their son Danny with him, hoping to use the isolation and quiet to write his novel. However, all is not as it should; The hotel's previous caretaker Grady killed his whole family there a decade earlier, Jack has previously been violent with Danny, and when they arrive to the hotel, they're introduced to head chef Dick Hallorann, who instantly connects with Danny, since they both share a form of telepathy he calls shining, and Hallorann tells Danny that the hotel also has a shine, due to past events. As the family passes the time alone in the hotel, small strange events start cropping up, Jack's mental state deteriorates, Wendy tries to keep things normal, and Danny has visions of people and events from the past. It doesn't end well, of course, especially when the hotel and its older inhabitants seem to take a special interest in Jack and his relationship with his family, but is it all in his mind?

This 4k remaster is pretty good, nice and sharp, very clean, and with reasonable grain and detail, although the color isn't fantastic, saturation and contrast seems like it could be better controlled, with the general look a little pallid and dull, but some overly saturated reds and oranges, and the occasional elevated black level. Still, more than good enough, both the 5.1 remaster and the original mono sound good, and the commentary track, despite not involving any of the core cast and crew, is both informative and entertaining.

HeVK torrents always have lots of keywords. Try searching for “hevk ghost” for more spirits from the past, benevolent or not so much, “hevk supernatural horror” for more scary shit from the great beyond, or “hevk 80s” for more from the decade when Kubrick, frankly, continued the run of bangers he'd been on since the late 60s and all through the 70s.
