Note : I enjoy a good comedy, and this horror parody seems to hit the right spot for the season. It's a frenetic, gag-a-minute affair, as you can expect, and like all the best Mel Brooks movies, stars Gene Wilder, this time as a reluctant descendant and heir of the original Dr. Victor Frankenstein. The pretty stacked cast also includes the lovely Teri Garr, an amazing performance by Marty Feldman, as well as Peter Boyle, Cloris Leachman, Madeline Kahn, and Gene Hackman in a small role.

Dr. Frederick Frankenstein is a lecturer at a medical school, and embarrassed about his heritage, insisting his last name is pronounced "Fronkensteen". After the death of his great grandfather, he inherits the family castle in Transylvania, and bids farewell to his snooty socialite girlfriend Elizabeth to inspect the property. Arriving by train, he's met by the hunchbacked Igor, a servant at the castle, and the lovely Inga, who's to be his assistant, and at the castle meets Frau Blücher, the stern housekeeper. When he discovers a secret passage to his grandfather's old laboratory, which also has his journals and all the notes on his experiments, Frederick decides to resume the research on animating the dead. With Igor's help, he steals the body of an executed criminal, but when trying to find the perfect brain, Igor messes up and gets an "abnormal" brain instead, without telling Frederick, and they succeed in reanimating the creature, but it's violent and has to be sedated. Now, Frederick has to contend with the distrustful townspeople, including a one-eyed police inspector, the unannounced arrival of his fiancée, all the while organizing a musical number to introduce the creature to society, and discovering the reanimated man's one large physical advantage.

This remaster is nice, clean, and sharp, perhaps a little grainier than it'd have to be, but it looks very good, with deep blacks and nice range. The cinematography is quite pretty, doing a good job of reproducing the look of classic Universal horror movies. The 5.1 remaster also sounds good, the original dual mono as well, and listening to Mel Brooks talk about the movie on the commentary track is a treat.

HeVK torrents always have lots of keywords. Try searching for “hevk comedy horror” for more frightful fun, “hevk music” for more song and dance numbers, or “hevk 70s” for more from the decade when the latest gothic horror wave was fizzling, making it ripe for parody.
