Note : A creepy little story about a man drawn by obsession into a curse that will consume him and his family: Learning to splice and project Super 8mm film. Ethan Hawke stars, of course, with Juliet Rylance, Fred Thompson, and Vincent D'Onofrio, in a tight, contained, and very dark film about the dangers of the photochemical process, and also corpsepaint.
True crime writer Ellison Oswalt moves into a new house with his family, wife Tracy, son Trevor, and daughter Ashley. Ellison found huge success with his first book, but has since struggled to repeat it, with a series of flops. Unbeknownst to his family, the house they're moving into was the home of a family which was mysteriously all murdered by hanging, except for the youngest daughter, who was abducted and never seen again, and Ellison hopes to write his next book on the case. In the attic, he finds a box of Super 8mm reels, labeled as home movies, but actually containing footage of the murders of various families throughout more than 50 years, and he immediately suspects he's discovered an unknown serial killer, eagerly keeping the films secret and studying them in minute detail. His obsession has negative effects on his mental state, especially after he starts noticing strange, possibly Satanic symbols and weird glimpses of a grotesque figure in the footage. As starts to suspect the murders are actually initiation rituals for a cult, strange things start happening in the house, and he and his family may all be in danger.
A basically perfect Blu-Ray of an extremely contrasty, saturated, and dark film, which I suspect has been shot with this look to vaguely emulate reversal film. There's very mild grain, which I have largely managed to retain, and it's sharp as a tack. The 7.1 track sounds as good as you'd expect, and I'd highly recommend the two commentary tracks, in particular the screenwriters one.
