The House That Jack Built
In five episodes, failed architect and vicious sociopath Jack recounts his elaborately orchestrated murders -- each, as he views them, a towering work of art that defines his life's work as a serial killer in the Pacific Northwest.

Note : Lars Von Trier, whose work I've generally enjoyed, gets into the weeds with a gory, sadistic serial killer movie that nevertheless wants to be arty, and ends up hopelessly pretentious as a result. Still, there are bright spots, the performances, particularly that of Matt Dillon, are very good, the gore effects are excellent and highly realistic, and there are flashes of pitch-black humor which I think it would have done better to lean into more. Still, worth watching if you like pretentiousness but also a lot of horrible, horrible torture and death, or just want to challenge yourself, I guess. The rest of the cast, who I suspect didn't quite know what they were in for, includes Bruno Ganz, Uma Thurman, Siobhan Fallon Hogan, Sofie Gråbøl, and Riley Keough. Note that this is definitely not for the faint hearted, as it includes graphic mutilation and murder, including of children, as well as animal cruelty.
As he goes through the nine circles of Hell, Jack, originally an architect, but mostly a serial killer, tells his story to Virgil, while both comment on flashbacks. Jack was a serial killer in the 1970s and 1980s, and has killed a large number of people in various gruesome ways, storing their bodies in a large freezer in an industrial area. In the first episode, he picks up a woman on a rural road to take her to get her jack fixed, but she annoys him so much he beats her to death with it. Next, he kills a widow, but his OCD forces him to come back and clean the crime scene multiple times, and he almost gets caught. In a panic, he drags the corpse behind his van back to his hideout, leaving a trail of gore, but sudden rainfall washes everything away, which he takes as a sign from God. In the third episode, he brings a woman and her two sons on a hunting trip, where he shoots both children, then forces the mother to pretend to have a picnic with the corpses before killing her. Then, he's in a relationship with a woman he abuses, who gets scared of him and runs away, but a police officer thinks she's drunk and sends her back, after which Jack slices her breasts off, leaving one on the police car and making a wallet out of the other. Finally, Jack has six men in his freezer, planning to line them up and kill all of them with a single bullet, but when he discovers he has the wrong type of ammunition, he goes off and almost gets caught, killing a contact and a police officer, before returning to the freezer, finding Virgil, and descending into hell through a hole in the ground in a house constructed out of frozen corpses. In the epilogue, he tries to escape hell, which doesn't go well.
This is an ultra-clean, tack-sharp transfer which will show you all the grisly details, excellent contrast and color, practically no grain or noise. The 5.1 track, as is usual with modern films, also sounds pretty perfect. No extras.
