Note : Time for some more classic Universal horror, and this one certainly has a stacked cast, starring both Boris Karloff and Bela Lugosi, in another "adaptation" of Poe's The Raven, this time credited as "suggested by", and as you can imagine, it doesn't have a lot to do with the poem, but features a Poe-obsessed villain and borrows liberally from Poe's other works. It's pretty fun, and features one of the original mad scientist villains with a lair full of traps and gizmos to sadistically off his victims, Lugosi's Vollin is as evil as they come, while Karloff manages a nice tragic monster role in the way he was so good at. The rest of the cast includes Lester Matthews, Irene Ware, Samuel S. Hinds, and Spencer Charters.
Neurosurgeon Dr. Vallin is reluctantly brought out of retirement to perform surgery on a young dancer named Jean, by her father and her fiancé's appeal to Vollin's vanity. The surgery is a success, and Jean recovers, but Vollin develops an obsession with her, and hires her fiancé Jerry as an assistant. When Jean discovers Vollin's true motives, she avoids him, but knowing he's obsessed with the works of Poe, she later surprises him by making her return to the stage a solo dance set to a recitation of "The Raven". Jean's father, Judge Thatcher, is against the relationship, and warns Vollin off, but he will not be dissuaded. Soon after, a man appears at Vollin's door asking Vollin to give him a new face, and Vollin recognizes him as Bateman, a bank robber and murderer on the run. Bateman is repentant, and Vollin says he will help him, only to disfigure his face during surgery, and forcing Bateman to help him with his schemes so that he will eventually undo the damage. With a strong, brutal, if reluctant assistant at his beck and call, Vollin extends an invitation to Jerry, Jean, her father, and some other guests to stay the weekend at his estate, and this is where his final evil machinations are set into motion.
This is a pretty decent remaster for such an old film, although it has the flaws you'd expect, it's very watchable, and the dual mono track also sounds fine. As you can imagine, the commentary tracks don't feature anyone actually involved with the production, but they're still interesting and informative.
