Fright Night
Nobody believes teenager Charley Brewster (William Ragsdale) when he discovers that his suave new neighbor, Jerry Dandridge (Chris Sarandon), is a vampire. So when the bloodsucker starts stalking Charley, he turns to has-been actor Peter Vincent (Roddy McDowall), famed for portraying a ghoul hunter. Unfortunately for the would-be vampire slayers, Dandridge has set his sights on Charlie's girlfriend in this clever spoof of the horror genre.
Fright Night (1985), directed by Tom Holland, Sony 4k remaster, encoded in 10 bit HEVC with AAC sound, including 7.1 remaster, original theatrical stereo, isolated score, two commentary tracks, and subtitles in twenty-four languages.
IMDb : https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0089175/
Video encoded in two-pass 13.0 Mbps x265 10bit with the veryslow preset for archive quality image. Audio encoded separately with Apple AAC for the highest-quality AAC sound available. Subtitles converted to VobSub and repositioned.
Note : Here's another higher-quality do-over of an older encode of mine, his is of course the directorial debut of Tom Holland (no, not Spider-Man), as well as his first team-up with Chris Sarandon, who he would later direct again in Child's Play. It's the quintessential 80s horror comedy, with highschoolers played by actors in their mid-to-late twenties, cool practical creature effects, and a whole lot of referencing Hammer Horror films and late-night horror hosts. It's a pretty straightforward vampire story with a few modern twists, and Sarandon's mixture of charm and menace makes it really work, although Roddy McDowall is also very good, and Stephen Geoffreys' performance as Evil Ed is memorably hysterical, but also manages to have some pathos.
Teenager Charley Brewster is a horror fan and obsessively watches Fright Night, a show hosted by archetypical movie vampire hunter actor Peter Vincent. When Brewster starts suspecting his new next-door neighbor Jerry Dandrige is a vampire, he bumbles around telling his mom and his friends, before calling the cops (the very best way to get rid of vampires). This doesn't work, but gets the vampire neigbor's attention, which leads to a number of dangerous situations. Brewster and his friend "Evil" Ed call on TV's own Peter Vincent, who's obviously not a real vampire hunter, but knows the lore, and when he's accidentally convinced Jerry's a vampire, it's a race against time to save Brewster's girlfriend Amy and vanquish the forces of evil.
This Sony 4k remaster is, I think, based on the same restoration as the MoC one, but it's higher bitrate, and we get a 7.1 remaster instead of the 5.1 from the old version. Commentary tracks are the same, and we get even more subtitles.
