Note : Tsui Hark's big-budget adaptation of the adventures of legendary Tang dynasty judge Di Renjie is probably not very historically accurate, and owes as much of a debt to 80s Hollywood action-adventure films like Indiana Jones, The Goonies, and especially Young Sherlock Holmes as they do to anything else, but it's still really fun to see a epic-scale fantastic mystery film set in Ancient China, with martial arts (with fight choreography by the legendary Sammo Hung), dazzling locations, and a somewhat complex plot. Tsui Hark is at the top of his game here, mixing the traditional Hong Kong film industry technique of recklessly endangering stunt doubles' lives with the full force of relatively modern CGI (which often looks stunning, but usually not entirely convincing), and a stable of very competent actors including Andy Lau, Li Bingbing, Deng Chao, Tony Leung, Carina Lau, and Charlie Ng. Also, there's a character named "Donkey Wang".
During the Tang dynasty, Wu Zetian is to become the first Empress of China, despite opposition from conservative officials. She's having a giant Buddha statue built overlooking her palace, but an official visiting the building site mysteriously bursts into flames, and it's up to Pei Donglai to investigate. He first suspects the chief builder, Shatuo, who had formerly been imprisoned after taking part in a rebellion, but there's no evidence, and soon after, Pei's superior also dies in a mysterious fire. The Empress orders rebel Di Renjie to be released from prison, as he's the best detective the Empire has known, and she sends her attendant Jing'er to fetch him. As Jing'er arrives, Di is being attacked by assassins, who jump into a flaming oven when cornered. Di is reinstated as royal detective, and after an attempt by Jing'er to seduce him, which is interrupted by more assassins, and an attempt by a prince to recruit Di into a group of assassins, Di finally gets to inspect the burned remains of the victims, and immediately deduces that a mysterious poison that catches fire when exposed to sunlight is at fault. As the group of investigators pursue various leads that take them across different epic locations, they stumble onto a complicated political conspiracy which might involve officials at the imperial court, and not everyone is who they seem.
This is a very nice transfer of a film that was seemingly shot on digital, and is totally devoid of grain, but has slightly oversharpened detail, and is digitally graded to within an inch of its life. It's very stylized, but generally looks good, except for some weird scaling artifacts in full CGI shots. The 7.1 track is impeccable, too bad there's no commentary or anything.
