Note : This was a request from a while back, and it ended up much more interesting than I thought, a sort of environmental thriller that turns into a strange folk horror, set in the middle of an incursion on Indigenous land by a logging company. The cast is headed up by Ron Lea and prolific Native American actor Graham Greene, who's said this is probably his favorite of his films, supported by Michael Hogan, Floyd Red Crow Westerman, Tia Smith, Rebecca Jenkins, and Tom Jackson.
Peter Maguire is an environmental lawyer who's just lost a case to protect Indian land from clearcutting. He arrives at the site, where his clients are still protesting and attempting to block the construction of a road, and witnesses police brutalizing the protesters. His contact, Wilf Redwing, stoically accepts the loss, but others aren't so tranquil, and Maguire says he will appeal the case, although he doubts their chances of success. When Maguire attends a sweat lodge ceremony with Wilf, he has violent visions of fallen trees, blood, and Arthur, a man he saw at the protests. The next day, Wilf introduces Maguire to Arthur, who's a militant activists, and the two joke around about blowing up the saw mill and skinning the manager alive. Later that night, Arthur takes Maguire along, kidnaps the sawmill manager, Bud, and the four, including Wilf, take off through the woods. Maguire tries to protest, but Arthur claims he'll show Maguire and Bud how to listen to Mother Earth. As they move further into the wilderness, Arthur's behaviour grows erratic and violent, and both Bud and Arthur complain to Maguire about his failure to take a side, and how he's made a profit even though he often loses court cases. Arthur tortures Bud, and when two mounties find them, Arthur kills them both. As things grow increasingly dire, Wilf hints that Arthur might not be just a man, but something much stranger, and it all leads to a haunting, painful conclusion.
This 4k remaster is unfortunately not as good as it could have been. On one hand, it's probably from an internegative or something similar, as it's quite contrasty and has crushed blacks and some blown-out highlights. Apart from that, it's also not all that clean. Otherwise, it's an acceptable enough viewing experience, but a restoration from the original negative would have been very preferable. The 5.1 remaster sounds fine, and the two commentary/interview tracks are both interesting enough, especially if you want to find out why a Polish director made a film like this.
