Note : What can you say about a film that's about as controversial today as it was when it premiered more than fifty years ago? Written, co-produced, directed, scored, edited by, and starring Melvin Van Peebles, who was fresh off of his first and only studio film, and financed in part by a loan from Bill Cosby, and with a soundtrack by Earth, Wind and Fire, this is the ultimate indie film. Experimental in form, shocking in content, sometimes amateurish technically, but always interesting. The controversy was in no small part because of director Van Peebles casting his 13 year old son Mario nude in a sex scene in the first few minutes of the movie. Van Peebles senior, playing the same character as an adult, a man whose superpower is fucking, gets it on quite a lot too, and apparently a large part of the sex is unsimulated, to the point where Van Peebles got gonorrhea during the shoot, sucessfully applied to the Director's Guild for worker's comp for getting hurt on the job, then reinvested that money to buy more film. It's a film like nothing else you've ever seen, for better or for worse. The mostly non-professional cast also includes Hubert Scales, Simon Chuckster, John Dullaghan, John Amos, and Rhetta Hughes.
A young Black man is taken in to work in a brothel in 1940s Los Angeles. He's seduced by one of the prostitutes, who name him "Sweet Sweetback" because of his large penis and incredible fuck-skills. Years later, he performs in a sex show at the same brothel, when some white cops who have dealings with his boss Beetle come in looking for someone to arrest for a murder, just for a few days to calm things down. Beetle volunteers Sweetback, but on the way to the police station, the cops pick up a young Black Panther named Mu-Mu, who they proceed to viciously beat. Sweetback gets enough of this after a while, and beats the cops to unconsciousness. Now a fugitive along with Mu-Mu, Sweetback goes on the run, seeking help from his boss, a priest, and several others with little luck. They concoct an escape plan involving the Hell's Angels, which also requires Sweetback to win a sex competition, killing some more racist cops, and nearly start a riot, all while making his way to the Mexican border.
This transfer is fine for what it is, but the film itself is wildly uneven in exposure, texture, grain, and color, and that's probably just the way it is. At this point, the technical deficiencies are almost a part of the viewing experience, so just go with it. The mono track sounds fine, and the two commentary tracks are very interesting, both getting Van Peebles' own perspective and that of a critic who has slightly more mixed feelings.
