Note : After Shaft, this is probably the most emblematic blaxploitation movie, and it stands out by also being a proper vigilante exploitation movie, with a lot of nudity and pretty gnarly violence. The star of the show, literally and figuratively, is of course Pam Grier, who's a total smokeshow here, co-wrote the script, and also gets naked quite a bit, in between shooting dudes in the head with a shotgun. It also features Robert DoQui, Sid Haig, Booker Bradshaw, William Elliott, Allan Arbus, Linda Haynes, Barry Cahill, and Lee de Broux. The soundtrack is funky as all hell, there's an extended cat fight where several women's clothes fall off, and Coffy shoots a guy in the dick. What more could you possibly want?

Emergency room nurse Coffin (no relation to Joe, I'm sure), who goes by Coffy, is out for revenge on the drug dealers who got her sister addicted to heroin, and uses her bountiful physical attributes to seduce and kill mob bosses and pushers alike, in between shifts at the hospital. One day, while visiting her friend, honest cop Carter, thugs break in and viciously beat him, leaving him a cripple, and also fondle Coffy, almost, but not quite, making this a rape-revenge film. Coffy's boyfriend is in politics, and is both going into the nightclub business and running for congress, in between his work in the Black community, but when Coffy goes after the city's biggest pimp and his Italian mob associate, she eventually gets in too deep, and finds out just how high the city's corruption goes...

This new Umbrella remaster isn't fantastic, although it has pretty good color and contrast, and not too obtrusive grain, it's a bit dirty and dusty, and could honestly have looked better. Still, not a bad viewing experience, the dual mono sounds fine, and the commentary track is interesting enough.
