Note : Death to HDR only 4k remasters, once again, and we're taking on the 20th Anniversary 4k remaster of Constantine. It's a great-looking film, and this transfer looks amazing, so all it needed was a little trim pass lovin' to make it just about perfect.

Francis Lawrence's adaptation of the Hellblazer comics definitely makes a bunch of controversial changes from the original, not least changing the main character from a blond Liverpudlian firmly rooted in the 80s, to a dark-haired, brooding, modern private eye type in 2000s LA. And that might put you off, but seen on its own, it's pretty damn good, a mix of cynical Los Angeles pulp tropes with cosmic conspiracies, angels and demons, urban legends, and the superstitious realities of a multiethnic, plurireligious modern metropolis. There's probably a bit more action than there should be for my taste, but it's damn cool looking, and has some inspired casting beyond post-Matrix cool Keanu Reeves, including Rachel Weisz (fine), Shia LaBeouf (eh), Djimon Hounsou (possibly even cooler than Keanu), our old pal Pruitt Taylor Vince, Gavin Rossdale for some reason, I guess he's good looking, and, in what might be the most pitch-perfect performances in a supernatural film in a good while, Tilda Swinton as an arrogant Archangel Gabriel, and Peter Stormare as a mercurial, beastly, and terrifying Lucifer.

A scavenger in Mexico discovers the spear that pierced Christ's side buried in an abandoned building, and becomes possessed and seemingly invulnerable, carrying the artefact towards Los Angeles. Down and out exorcist and supernatural investigator John Constantine witnesses unusual demonic activity, with a demon trying to bodily break through into the material world. Constantine is dying from lung cancer, but tries every trick in the book to extend his life. Police detective Angela Dodson is investigating the death of her twin sister Isabel, who leaped to her death from the roof of a psychiatric hospital where she was a patient. Angela thinks her sister must have been coerced, since she was a devout Catholic and would not have committed the mortal sin of suicide. Her investigation leads her to Constantine, who's uninterested in helping until he discovers demons are chasing Angela. He confirms that Isabel is indeed in hell, and tells Angela that he also tried to kill himself as a teenager, being clinically dead and going to hell for several minutes before being revived, and that this sin has condemned his soul as well. Constantine's friend Father Hennessy discovers a symbol on Isabels' wrist at the morgue, but is killed by half-breed demon Balthazar before being able to contact Constatine, however, they discover he cut the symbol into his own hand before dying. As Constantine and Angela piece together the outlines of an occult conspiracy to break the truce between heaven and hell and take over Earth, Angela must rediscover her latent psychic powers, and Constantine enlists the help of his friend and driver Chas and voodoo priest Papa Midnite to try to intervene.

This transfer is excellent, with great detail, punchy color and contrast, and restrained grain. The 7.1 track also sounds very good, the commentary tracks are quite interesting, and there are a huge number of subtitles, including a trivia track in many languages.
