They are bored by sun, bored by rain, bored by wind and, if they could have their way, they would do away with the climate, the seasons, the weather, and have nothing but a grey, sooty dome over the city ; and by their actions they ensure that that is what they nearly always have.

They call it mist, they make a fuss about it, show it to you, glory in it as a local product. And it is a local product. But it isn't mist.

No, mist is, if anything, a country product, that rises from the steaming irrigation channels that water the Lombard meadows, making possible as many as ten crops of hay a year, and there is indeed a stable smell about the mist in the country. But in the city it is not mist.

If anything, it's an evil-tempered emission of fumes, a flatulence of men, engines and chimneys, it's sweat and the stink of feet and the dust raised by the stiletto heels of the secretaries, whores, salesmen, typographers, public relations men, shorthand-typists, it's the breath of bad teeth, stomach ulcers, dyspepsia and constipation, the stink of deodorised armpits and unemployed vaginas and penes.

Sometimes a wind does reach the city, an odourless wind that has no name, because nobody takes the trouble to breathe it in or call it anything. You can't tell where it comes from, or rather it comes from everywhere, it catches you at every street-corner and you cannot get away from it. When it comes, it sweeps away the sooty dome, and for a few hours you seem to be wearing spectacles, the pattern of all the buildings stands out sharply and clearly, in the evening the lights shine brilliantly, and you can even see the stars, as well as Monte Rosa from the terrace.

Two or three times a year you see the Lombard sky, which is so beautiful when it is beautiful. But the movers and shovers get to work again straight away, remaking the fumes and flatulence and stink, the exhalations and clouds of dust, and in at most a couple of days' time the sooty dome has been re-formed, and they sigh with relief, because they have recovered their native, sunless, windless, rainless air.

Sometimes it rains, I know, actually it rains often, but at the first drop somebody must give a warning signal, because umbrellas and mackintoshes appear simultaneously all over the city, forming a canopy lower than the other one, a dome beneath the dome, and it keeps out the water, which in any case is impregnated with soot, because it comes, not from the clouds, but from the sooty dome, and it too is a collective meteorological product, a flatulence of men, chimneys and engines that has met a colder layer of air and condensed into this kind of city dish-water.
