Note : Serendipitously, when the RedLetterMedia Best of the Worst Halloween 2025 episode dropped (also featuring immortal Italian incest zombie classic Burial Ground), I had already encoded this fairly fresh Vinegar Syndrome 4k remaster of Howling II, but I hadn't watched it, so I was unaware of how hilariously bad it was. This rectified, I had to get it to you freaks ASAP, and here it is, a largely incoherent mess which somehow managed to enlist Christopher Lee in a fairly major role. It's directed by the guy who made Communion, a better, but less funny film, and also stars Annie McEnroe, Reb Brown (Captain American/Thick McRunfast himself!), Marsha Hunt, Sybil Danning, whose topless shots the film gets extra mileage out of in the end credits sequence, and British singer-songwriter/actor Jimmy Nail for some reason. This motley crew makes this an... unforgettable experience, and hey, at least the werewolf sex isn't animated for reasons best left unexplained.
Ben, the brother of Karen, the main character from the first film, attends his sister's funeral, where he meets her colleague Jenny, and a strange British man named Stefan Crosscoe, who's obsessed with werewolves (yes, we get the film's title in a line here). Crosscoe provides evidence to back up his claims, and appears to destroy Karen's undead body when it rises from the grave. We get Christopher Lee going undercover at a punk gig before the gang sets off for Transylvania, where Crosscoe wants to kill Stirba, the immortal queen of the werewolves. They also run into Mariana, another female werewolf who's very horny, and werewolf-hating dwarf Vasile. However, they run into difficulties as Stirba's minions kill Vasile and she reanimates him as the world's tiniest and most ineffective zombie assassin, as well as Stirba attempting to summon a demon, and lots of lots of werewolf sex. Make sure to watch the end credits, as there's a... creative montage you'll want to see to believe.
Shot in Czechoslovakia in the waning days of communism, this is actually a pretty handsome looking film (although it's overly determined to milk its locations, get ready to see a lot of that fucking Prague clock, as well as a werewolf ritual/orgy in the Sedlec ossuary), but this transfer feels a bit flat and lifeless, I'm not sure if it's the color, the contrast, or the slightly soft but also grainy feel. Still, watchable enough, and the mono track sounds fine. I would have loved to have some riffing on this, but sadly no tracks were to be found, although there are three normal commentary tracks.
